1970 ROVER P6B SERIES 1 “THREE THOUSAND FIVE”
This car was produced for the UK market in May 1970 as one of the increasing rare Series 1 “Three Thousand Five” with the V8 high compression engine (10.5/1) and a 3 speed automatic gearbox. It has been in the current owner’s hands from Sept 2015 since when a vast amount of care, cash and attention has been lavished to bring it up to a really exceptional standard. It is now in fine driving and showing condition and ready for regular use. It comes with a substantial and detailed history file and all invoices/receipts accounting for the £32,000(+) spent during the last 5½ years. Mileage currently 97,000.
The bodywork has been totally restored and the car resprayed in its original and attractive Sage Green colour. During the restoration, all panels and doors were removed (except the roof) and stripped to make any necessary repairs prior to repainting. Any corrosion found was excised and replaced with new metal. The bare “skeleton” chassis was then abraded and new metal let in where required. The coachwork was reassembled using the best anti-corrosion treatments and all box sections were wax-injected. The outcome is a totally corrosion-free platform that will last for many years to come.
The engine was removed, stripped and fully rebuilt using new parts (+0.010” pistons, connecting rods, valves, valve springs, push rods, camshaft and followers, bearings, oil and water pumps, bearings, seals, filters, etc). The twin SU carburettors were stripped and rebuilt. All hoses were renewed. The short engine was built up by respected Rover V8 specialists, JE (John Eales) Developments. Modern crankshaft oil seals and a full balance were included in this work. A hi-torque starter motor was fitted along with electronic ignition. Once back in the car, the engine was set up by Rover V8 tuning specialists Lloyd Specialist Developments.
The BW35 gearbox and fluid flywheel were completely stripped and rebuilt by TES transmissions (Westbury).
The transmission and suspension was recommissioned with new brake calipers, brake hoses, rear wheel bearings and a new set of 185 x 14” tyres.
The interior of the car was stripped out (less the excellent original headlining and sun visors) and new sound deadening and upholstery were fitted throughout the cabin. The rebuilt seats are correctly trimmed with leather facings in the original Buckskin colour. All door cards and other internal trim panels have also been re-trimmed. New leather-bound carpets are fitted throughout with matching over-mats.
The car is now in outstanding condition, in a delightful colour combination (Sage green/Buckskin) and drives beautifully. It comes with a substantial history file including a Driver’s Instruction Manual, Sales Brochure, original Motor Road Test Report, bills, receipts and photos of the restoration.
The car now has a brand new MOT!
