SLJ Hackett are delighted to present another extremely rare Bristol.

This is a 1955 Bristol 404, 1 of only 51 examples ever produced by the factory in Filton, Bristol. Originally dispatched on the 31st of March 1955 to Bristol distributors in Glasgow, Scotland. The coachwork was presented in Ash Grey paired with Spanish Red upholstery, now presented in timeless Dark Green (BRG) paired with Black leather upholstery.

404/2045 is highly recognisable amongst the 51 404’s produced as it is only 1 of 2 fitted with the rear storage compartment. The car features a highly impressive history file which dates back to 1955. Bristol Cars purchased the car in 1989 after not being used for some 20 years and the commenced the total restoration which included a bare metal restoration and renewal of the ash frame. Following the restoration at Bristol Cars 404/2045 was sold to a Mr Norman of West Lothian who owned the car for 8 years, during these years the car visited very frequently the Edinburgh based Bentley & Rolls Royce specialists, Ian F. Cunningham.

In 1999 Spencer Lane-Jones Ltd became aware of 404/2045 and would then proceed to religiously see the car at least once a year for 2 decades. In 2019 the owner a Mr Ford was noted to be very much the driver as opposed to a collector, he insisted on having the car in tip top condition mechanically. Shortly after purchasing the car he commissioned Bristol engine specialist IN Racing to carry out a complete ‘fast road’ build which in total cost circa £40,000. The compression ratio was increased from 8.5:1 to 10:1.

The Bristol 404 was launched at the 1953 Earls Court Motor Show in 1953, the Bristol was very much a shock if compared to the previous models Bristol produced. Based upon the short chassis Bristol ever used on their production cars, the 404 was labelled the ‘Business mans express’.
