The Bristol Beaufighter (412 Series 3 Beaufighter) is largely based on the Zagato Of Milan styled Bristol 412. Bristol Cars replaced the 6.6L Chrysler V8 for the 5.9L V8 fitted with a turbo charger. The turbo charger kit chosen was the Roto-Master made in America which originally was water cooled but Bristol Cars decided they would look to improve this in their own way. The engineers dismantled the system to understand how everything worked, parts were removed and modified until the end product was complete with the addition of Bristol’s priority valve which essentially bypassed the turbo compressor at low speeds and light rpm which in turn kept the turbo temperature low and also increased fuel efficiency.

‘Add a turbo charger to one of the worlds most luxurious and exclusive cars and you come up with the fastest accelerating automatic full four-seater production machine made today. And that’s precisely what Bristol have done…’    Motor, January 12th 1980.

Zagato Of Milan Styling

Following the success of the Bristol 411’s then managing director Anthony Crook has the desire to build a drop head coupe much like the earlier Bristol 402 & Bristol 405 DHC. Unfortunately, he was assured by his designers the Bristol 411 base wasn’t suable nor cost efficiency to develop into a drop head so he looked to his strong connections in Italy, on this occasion Zagato of Milan were commissioned to design his predecessor to the 411. They opted to use the Targa top style which in turn made the car far more safe than a standard convertible, it was nicknamed the ‘Safety convertible’.

This example has been in the ownership of the previous owner since 1991. Over the years marque specialists have always carried out regular repairs. B813 NLF has been in storage and unused for almost 20 years meaning the car does require recommissioning before being brought back onto the road. We have had the car on a vehicle inspection ramp and were delighted to find next to no major corrosion in aeras we have seen similar cars suffer over the years. The car is in generally good order considering the time it has been stood. The engine turns over on the key and builds oil pressure well.
